Candle Making Basics
Before You Get Started
Now that you are really keen to get started, before you do, you need to consider the equipment involved and how it works and where to get it.
Basic Requirements
Organise plenty of storage space for all your materials.
Sort out a cool place to put your finished candles because they will sag in hot temperatures.
Stock up on the utensils you will need to melt and blend the waxes, moulds and wax additives.
What Do You Need In Your Kit?
In your kit you will need the wax which you can buy in sheets, slabs or beads; colours, an accurate thermometer to gauge temperature, stearic acid, a heating medium, such as a double boiler, pot holders or pliers, heat gun, the moulds and mould accessories like wicks, lead, clay as well as a mould release like silicone spray but peanut oil works well too, a wick cutter, wick clips, wooden spoon for stirring wax and a dowel for poking relief holes in moulded candles, a water bath, dye chips, stainless steel hot knife, small safety information labels, candle paint, and finally a baking pan at least eight inches square, this has numerous uses but is mainly used for levelling the bottom of moulded candles.
Do NOT think about making candles if you don’t have a suitable, extremely accurate thermometer. It will need to clip to the pot.
